Only 5(6) cars of the BUTATTI Type 54 wsere built between 1931 and 1934. The Type 54 was derived from the 16 cylinder Type 45 and the motor is a variant of that of the Type 50, a 5 liter engine with 300 horsepower which powers the wheels through a 3 gear transmission! The front heavy vehicle was hard to maneuver and only after remounting the engine closer the back, was it able to take part in racing on fast tracks. It’s first grand prix took place in Monza in 1931 under the drivers C. Chiron and A. Varzy, the latter winning 3rd place. In 1933 he won the grand prix in Germany at Avus. Another well known driver of the Type 54 was Count Czaykowki and in England Kay Don was driving a red T54, named “Tiger Two”, on the Brooklands track.
