The Idea
After decades of building models of
historical race- and sportscars in small scale in 1991 we finally decided to
build a model from scratch in 1/12 scale. We, that’s commercial illustrator Karl-Heinz
Hornberg and dentist Dr Gerd Winkelmann. Our choice
was the rare BUGATTI type 54. This car was often racing at the Oldtimer Grand
Prix at the Nürnburgring which came in handy for taking all the measurements
and pictures we needed to start. After draftings and lots of model related
technical drawings we got down to taking over 700 measurements of the original
BUGATTI. We measured everything from the length of the car to the dimensions of
the little wired secured wingnuts that fasten the body to the frame. Over 230
pictures helped us build the model.
